Marietjie has transitioned from a 20-year long career as practising attorney in health law and biotechnology to academia focussing on interdisciplinary research in the intersection between science, technology and law. She holds the degrees of BProc, LLB, LLM (Intellectual Property Law) and a PhD (Biotechnology Law). In 2019 Marietjie has joined the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal as a postdoctoral researcher in the Health Law and Bioethics research group lead by Prof Thaldar where she specifically focusses on the governance of advanced biotechnical therapies, ethics pertaining to stem cell and genetic research, privacy issues relating to health information and data sharing and commercialisation. Marietjie also teaches Medical Law, Human Rights and Ethical Theories to medical students at the School of Health Sciences, University of Kwa-Zulu Natal.
Since the COVID-19 outbreak in December 2019 Marietjie was appointment by the National Research Foundation (NRF), the Department of Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation (DPME) and Government Technical Advisory Centre (GTAC) to the Expert Group leading the development of the COVID-19 County Report on the implementation of measures to combat COVID-19 in South Africa. In February 2020 Marietjie was also appointed by the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf) to serve on the study panel investigating the Ethical, Legal and Social Issues related to Gene Therapy.
On 1 April 2021 Marietjie joined Prof Gabriele Lenzini’s IRiSC Research Group at the SnT Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability Security and Trust focussing on the redesign of a legal and ethical digital consent model for long term genomic data storage and future use.
